[2026 International Forum and Workshop on Creative Engagement] Professional Development Workshops──Session IV
The Dresden Bürger:Bühne – Aesthetics and Methods of Intergenerational Theatre Work
As artistic director of Bürger:Bühne, Christiane LEHMANN provides theoretical and practical insight into intergenerational work with citizens aged 14 and above in Dresden. Since 2009, Bürger:Bühne at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden has been bringing people together on stage in various formats, productions, B:Clubs and special projects who would otherwise probably never have met. The Bürger:Bühne sees itself as a cosmopolitan, diverse meeting place for generations, social groups and cultures. Why is there a need for an intergenerational, participatory section at the theatre? Which aesthetics, working methods and narratives have proven successful? How can we invite people in a low-threshold way and still produce professional art? What challenges await us in working with multigenerational ensembles who 'meaningfully' 'waste' their free time in the theatre? What framework conditions and structural decisions are needed to listen to and have an impact on a city’? Based on the Dresden model, this workshop will explore aesthetic approaches, techniques and working methods in the field of professional theatre with non-professional performers.
