They developed a peer-mentor dynamic that spanned over a decade. GILLESPIE was not only a musical mentor but a pivotal figure in SANDOVAL's life. In 1990, with Dizzy GILLESPIE's discreet assistance, SANDOVAL sought asylum at the US embassy during a European tour. This successful relocation began a new chapter in his cross-border artistic career, granting him the freedom to create and perform.
